Descripción: From the Inside FlapIn this warm and inspiring tale, two rulers, the Prince of the Midnight Kingdom and the Princess of the Desert Kingdom each have a big problem. The Midnight Kingdom is overflowing with water, but is in desperate need of oil to light its lamps. The Desert Kingdom is blessed with oil, but in dire need of water to grow its gardens. Each faces disaster. After all, the Prince cannot be princely without his royal pajamas, and he can't find them in the dark; the Princess cannot be princess-ly without her royal tea, and she can't make tea without water! The royal rulers each ask God for help, but they prove too stubborn and full of pride to ask eachother. It takes a minstrel, a pair of opinionated royal riding-birds and their young keepers, and a simple act of kindness for the kingdoms to learn that they need only reach out to each other to find God's answers to their prayers.Multicultural, Nondenominational, NonsectarianEndorsed by Protestant, Catholic and Jewish Religious Leaders"God was sad that the Prince and Princess had refused to see the answers to their prayers.…"Water and oil, light and dark, summer rain and desert wind: In this fable of opposites, award-winning author Sandy Eisenberg Sasso shows children and adults of all faiths and backgrounds how self-centered actions affect the people around us, and how by working together we can work with God―to create a better world. From School Library JournalGr 1-3-A story that explores the consequences of pride and vanity. The Kingdom of Midnight has plenty of water, but no oil to light the lamps at night. The Kingdom of the Desert has plenty of oil, but no water for the gardens. The Grand Prince from Midnight and the Grand Princess from the Desert both pray to God for an answer to the problem. They are shown that the answer lies in the other kingdom, but both of them are too stubborn and prideful to ask the other for help. Through the aid of two children, they do finally meet in the valley between their kingdoms, but neither one is able to make the first move. Instead, they stand waiting and in the process turn into stone mountains. While looking for the two rulers, the children meet and exchange their precious resources. In this way, the people's desperate needs are met. Sasso's lyrical style carries readers through the story, masking the didactic tone of the text. Katz's use of lush blues and purples for the Kingdom of Midnight and golden yellows for the Kingdom of the Desert in full- and half-page spreads makes this a good choice for storytimes.-Tali Balas, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York CityCopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.Review"Reminds us to listen to the wisdom of children and illustrates how we are each God in action.
