Descripción: This Christmas, join a young girl and her grandmother as they embark on a holiday adventure to see The Nutcracker together! Her grandmother, known as Grand Jeté, was once a prima ballerina and danced in The Nutcracker herself, and now she’s sharing the magic of this special ballet. Former prima ballerina Allegra Kent and bestselling Fancy Nancy illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser collaborate to create an inspiring and festive tale for the littlest dancers and Nutcracker fans everywhere.Grand Jeté is an expert on everything elegant and makes sure to always model the proper etiquette of a poised ballerina. Her granddaughter wants to be just like her one day.Take a bow!Straight spine.Look your best. And always carry flowers!Follow the pair as they embark on an unforgettable trip to their favorite theater to see The Nutcracker—sharing the spirit of ballet wherever they go."The detailed illustrations, featuring the New York City Ballet’s Nutcracker costumes and sets, are joyous and bubbly." — Kirkus Reviews“An easy addition to holiday collections, certain to appeal to Nutcracker fans and balletomanes.” –School Library Journal“Numerous engaging pictures will entice readers to take the time to pour over…this charming story.” –Booklist“Glasser’s kinetic, wispy artwork…warmly pays homage to ballet form onstage and off, capturing the text’s free-spirited, memory-centered vibe.” –Publishers Weekly“When the little girl visits her grandmother…dance infuses their ordinary moments.” –Horn Book MagazineFrom School Library JournalK-Gr 3-A little girl is off to see her grandmother, known affectionately as Grand Jeté. Grand Jeté is a former prima ballerina and brings theatricality and chic extravagance to everything she does with her granddaughter, from bowing to vendors in the street to practicing the perfect flower toss for the end of a performance. After getting dressed up in special holiday ensembles, the duo heads to the New York City Ballet to see the iconic George Balanchine's The Nutcracker. Following the rousing and nostalgic performance, Grand Jeté tells the little girl that she could one day follow in her own prima ballerina footsteps as they dance out of the theater. Readers unfamiliar with the plot of the Nutcracker gain a brief understanding of the story, but it may work better as a refresher than as a primer for new audiences. The little girl is uniformly thrilled by absolutely everything, which leaves the impression that her character is chiefly a vessel for the more developed Grand Jeté's remembrances of her own days as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Disappointingly, few people of color are present in the audience and on stage. Back matter includes a note from author Kent, sharing her own history with The Nutcracker and a touching tribute to George Balanchine, as well as a glossary of the ballet terms used in the text such as plié and chassé. VERDICT This is an easy additon to holiday collections, certain to appeal to Nutcracker fans and balletomanes.-Alyssa Annico, Youngstown State Univ., OHα(c) Copyright 2011. Having been a dancer herself, she is an example of the powerful effect of seeing the world through eyes trained to create and appreciate beauty, and she turns the act of attending The Nutcracker into a performance itself. As it should be." — Gregory Victor, of the Jerome Robbins Foundation"Glasser’s years of ballet training are evident in the book’s illustrations, which depict the dancers exhibiting perfect technique. They’re also a beautiful testament to Balanchine’s choreography and Karinska’s beloved costumes, drawn here in exquisite detail. The character of Grand Jeté, with her long neck and upswept gray hair, also brings Kent’s delicate grace to the page." — Pointe Magazine"Th
