One by one they run back to the house scared off by a new animal that comes by until the last one finds itself far down the ice and has to hurry back, past each of the ten animals. Hurry, hurry! Scurry scurry! Safe in the house, sneaked the small mouse, one winter night, under the moonlight. The original edition of One Winter Night (Simply Read Books, 2007) earned an Honorable Mention at the Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design. Review Praise for One Winter Night:"Highly Recommended. One winter night, ten mice go out onto the ice. Lloyd’s engaging verses describe the delightful play of the group as they frolic and skate. However, our furry friends are soon interrupted by other denizens of the night as they each begin their own nocturnal activities. On each page, a prowling owl, a skiing squirrel, a hockey-playing hare, a curling fox and other creatures send the mice scurrying, one by one, back into their home. Not only does One Winter Night provide readers with many fun activity ideas for gloomy winter nights, the book gives young readers plenty of opportunities to practice their counting skills. In addition, the illustrations on the left pages offer a bonus narrative for readers. The right side illustrations align with the story told through the verses whereas, on the left, the curious activities of a group of ants tell an interesting side-story. After a first read-through, parents can draw children’s attention to the exploits of the ants as they work together to pull a wool ball, collect sticks, and use a leaf as a toboggan. Jennifer Lloyd’s gripping story and Lynn Ray’s lively acrylic colours make for a wonderful treat on a cold winter night with readers cozying up in a warm indoor setting. While delighting in the story, young readers will also get a chance to practice counting skills and apply their imaginative minds to the story within the story. Canadian audiences will be extra delighted with the many familiar activities and creatures portrayed that are commonly found in a Canadian winter." ― CM: Canadian Review of MaterialsPraise for the previous edition of One Winter Night:"Exquisite...on page after stunning page of poetry and accompanying illustrations, the mice encounter other denizens of the winter night." ― Susan Perren, Globe & Mail"A rare thing it is to find a holiday offering for children untethered to the licensed-character marketing beast. Rarer still to find a book that gives shape to the sensibility of a Canadian Christmas without serving up the usual bland casserole, complete with the certainty of a Christmas morning payload for every “good” girl and boy at its end. While promoted as a “non-denominational book for the holidays,” One Winter Night is quite unattached to the usual seasonal hype, and only hints at the holidays through the use of visual cues (holly, snow, and the colour red). It is the story of 10 mice who venture out to play on the ice. They encounter a variety of animals who scare them back to the security of their nest one by one, until the last remaining mouse must run the gamut of wildlife in reverse in order to make his escape. Told in looping, repetitive verse, the story builds in momentum and concludes in a style similar to that holiday standard “The Twelve Days of Christmas." Author Jennifer Lloyd, a kindergarten teacher, clearly understands how to write for the ears of small children. She uses rhyme, repetition, and onomatopoeia to great effect. Lynn Ray’s unique and richly hued illustrations complement the book’s design and give the subtle storyline more depth. Like the best picture book illustrators, Ray has enhanced the story without obscuring it – many of the animals who frighten the mice out on the ice wear Canadian emblems and gear for winter sports ranging from skiing to
