This book is but a first attempt to present an outline of Mexican Autochthonous Psychology; to
provide a more complete description not one but hundreds of wiser volumes, better prepared than
this, would be necessary.
The conceptual complexity and wisdom of the Mexican spirit, together with the quantity of data
that exists on the subject, are reflected in the growing number of shamans and indigenous
psychologists, the ‘men of knowledge’, who must amount to thousands and can be found in each
and every village, town and city in Mexico.
This book is but a modest, anecdotic attempt to open the readers’ eyes to a hidden but living,
sheltered but pulsating reality within the essence and heart of Mexico. This work was originally
planned as a series of articles and is intended to be the beginning of a process to rescue Mexico’s
original wisdom, a wisdom devalued and crushed by the Conquest and Modernism, but wisdom
nonetheless and as such a millenary survivor. I hope that this book will make us, the inhabitants
of Mexico, see that behind the scenes of the crisis of materialism, our spirit is asking to be reborn
and it is our obligation to give birth to it.
