From the Revolution onwards, he tried to adapt his antique inspiration to the subjects of his time by also painting works with a contemporary theme. The most characteristic works are The Pledge of the Palm Game, The Death of Marat and The Rite.Portraiture is the other pictorial genre that makes his work recognizable. From the beginning of his career until his exile in Belgium, he portrayed his relatives and friends as well as the notables of his entourage; his attempts at the official portrayal concerned his equestrian portraits of Napoleon in the coronation costume, that of Pope Pius VII, and his portraits of some members of the regime, including Estève and Français de Nantes. His style in this genre is a prelude to Ingres' portraits. We also know three self-portraits of him.
